1,800 followers give away

With all of the exciting things happening in the tatting world more people have found my blog and associated facebook page. When I checked this morning the facebook page was up to 1,806 followers. So, to share my excitement I am going to have a little giveaway.

Here are the four books which I will post to the winner of the giveaway**.

Two are vintage publications, one is a recent reprint of a vintage publication and the hard cover ‘new dimensions in tatting’ is an ex-library copy of 1994 reprint. Some really great patterns in these books and ideas for taking tatting in different directions too. These books all have lovely items, and I have made things from most of them- for example: the anchor doily I made for my sister is a republished pattern from the ‘Coats 1088- learn tatting’ book on the right; The tatted collar I made for a christmas present is from ‘Coats 660 Learn Tatting (middle back); and one of my favourite handkerchief edgings is from the re-printed ‘tatting 2 more doilies and edges’.

Details on how to enter: The books in the prize pack have some of my favourite tatting patterns in them. In the comments below on the blog or on this facebook post please let me know–  What is your favourite tatting pattern at the moment?

Only relevant comments on the blog will be counted in the random choosing of the winner, and all comments will be moderated before publishing (to keep spam out). Winner will be drawn and announced on Sunday February 4th, 2018 at 4pm Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time (AEDT) – so you have over a week to enter.

Looking forward to reading your comments 🙂

Best of luck and happy tatting

Fiona T

**I have purchased all of these books personally. There is no business motive for this giveaway. Three of the items are second hand books, and have some wear as expected with vintage/second hand pattern books. Each comment on the blog and facebook page will count as a separate entry. The order of comments will be noted and my son will choose the winner using a random number generator. The giveaway is open to all followers with an address I can post to. I will contact the winner via email/facebook messenger and announce on the facebook page and blog, you will have three days to respond otherwise the prize will be re-drawn.

Knitting in the round – owl cable hats

A little while ago I saw this very cute pattern on Julie is Coco and Cocoa, and it was knitted in the round using a very short cable needle. I really wanted to try out this kind of knitting, and so purchased the pattern from her etsy link. The pattern was reasonably easy to follow and, once I got clear on the way it was worded (and needed to check back to the blog itself for the revised instructions, hints and tips) I remade the hat twice more to get it to fit me (increasing the stitch counts according to the noted on the blog).  This hat is pictured above, being started at one of my favourite cafes and the finished in the picture beside it – Bendigo Wool mills 8Ply milky way (wool and milk fibre yarn). Sometimes working through these problems makes you feel more triumphant when you do complete a project.

Despite the sizing hiccup, the pattern was quite fun to make, and also to practice cables, so I bought some new 10ply Bendigo wool mills bamboo/wool blend yarn and made the one in the bottom picture. I have yet to add buttons to either hat, as we are now getting warmer weather in Melbourne and I no longer need the hat for my walk into work. I will source some cheap buttons over summer so the hats will look new for the rotation in time for Winter 2017.

Don’t forget to enter the 1,500 likers giveaway, you can enter by commenting on the blog post here: 1,500 likers giveaway or on the facebook page with the post about the 1,500 likers blog.

Until next time, happy crafting,

Revisiting the Tatted Tardis pattern

Last week I decided to tat another Tardis, and I dug out the pattern and threads to begin. I decided to try and get an idea of the amount of thread needed on each shuttle to make one, and measured out 4.5m of thread for each shuttle. As I had some thread left on each shuttle I will try again this week with 3 meters of thread – hopefully not too much left over.

This is a great pattern to practice split rings on, and there is one split chain too. Once mastered, these two techniques open up a lot of opportunities in tatting, including being able to reduce the number of ends to sew in on older patterns.

The Tardis pattern is one I adapted and shared a long time ago, that Anne Bruvold kindly added to her original version of the pattern as an adaptation Anne B’s Tatted Tardis, available for download from here: http://nuperelle.net/EngPatterns.htm . I have tweaked it again to add a white ring to act as the ‘notice’ on the window of the Tardis.

Don’t forget to enter the 1,500 liker giveaway by commenting on the blog from Sunday: 1,500 likers giveaway or over on the Facebook page under the post for the 1,500 likers blog link.

Until next time, happy tatting

1,500 likers giveaway

I’m very excited to announce a new giveaway to celebrate 1,500 likers on the One Mad Tatter Facebook page. There will be two prizes – one for my Australian and New Zealand followers, and one for my international followers. For my local followers, I will put together a craft pack- including a vintage tatting book and Alenalea thread, that I will post to you. The ever increasing price of international postage means that the International prize will be a selection of PDF tatting patterns, that can be delivered by email to you.

The threads and PDF patterns will come from Alenalea’s Etsy shop . The International winner will get the 2015 snowflakes pattern and have a choice of 2 other patterns from Alenalea’s store. I have organised to pay for these patterns on your behalf and email them to you. Once again- this is a hobby blog and I have no commercial motive, only that I would like to support local and international tatters. Thanks to the lovely Lea for letting me gift her patterns in this round-about way.

For the local winner – I have added a photo of the books I will give away below. I will also include some of Lea’s lovely threads (from my stash) and some beads and little tatting knit knacks.

To enter: please answer the question by commenting below, or on the One Mad Tatter Facebook page under the post where this link is shared. The prize will be drawn next Sunday, November 20th at 16.00 (4pm) Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time. I will list all of your names in the order you have commented, assign a number and get my random number generator (AKA my son, Little Tacker) to pick a number. I will announce the winner on the facebook page and blog on Sunday November 20th,  after the draw.

THE QUESTION: I wonder what is your favourite pattern to make and why? It may be a tatting pattern, or another craft.

In other news: Recently, I did enjoy test tatting and making Alenalea’s little christmas tree 🙂 This was made in size 50 Altin Basak threads, with some seed beads and a little bell added. They would make a nice earring in this size, although I think I will add some ribbon and use it as an ornament alongside some little Angels from last year.

So, good luck with your entries, and I look forward to reading and responding to your comments.

As always, happy tatting,

Fiona T

A pattern won and made.

The winner of the 1,000 likers on facebook prize, Janis, received her craft pack recently. Here is a quick picture of what ended up in the pack. I included a purple birch ‘joke’ shuttle and a few other little surprises too. It is lovely to share the crafting fun with everyone. Next giveaway will be at 1,500 likers. Again- thanks to everyone for following – it is so much fun to have you with me on my crafting journey 🙂

Around the time of my own 1,000 likes giveaway recently, I entered a giveaway on Dearest Debi’s facebook page.  I was one of the winners,  and was given a code to select three of Debi’s crochet patterns from ravelry for free!  I was really excited- she has some lovely patterns.  Here is one I selected- flower bud granny octagon. I have just sat down and made this now,  and the pattern was pretty easy to follow (I made the usual substitutions from US pattern terms to the ones I am familiar with), and I am really pleased with the results.

Thanks for the patterns Debi, I look forward to trying the others I downloaded very soon.
Until next time,  happy crafting

An op shop find and a random ‘craft pack’ prize draw

A few weeks ago my sister and I stopped into an op shop on our way to play tennis. We looked through some great stuff, though their craft section was a bit disappointing. I found I couldn’t walk out of the shop without this little beaded pearl purse. I have no idea what I will do with it- but it is so nice. I’m sure I will use it one day 😀op shop beaded purse and gloves

Thanks to my lovely followers here and on facebook- now just over 800 likers, and nearly 900 with an rss link directly to the blog too 🙂 To celebrate, I decided that I would have a random ‘craft pack’ prize draw. But, this time there is a difference- I have already drawn a winner. I decided to draw the prize from those who have commented on my blog the most since it began. It is my way of honouring those of you who have been on this journey with me for a long time, and who have supported me consistently with lovely comments. There are approx 10 regular commenters over the last 3 years….including Tatting Margaret, Barbara G, Notewords, Muskaan, Kristen, Berice, Marina, and Jenni. So- without any further ado- the winner is (brrrrr.. drum roll)  Barbara G. Your craft pack will include a book (I will give you a couple of choices), thread and some surprises 🙂 Barbara- please contact me through facebook message, or craftree to organise which books and delivery 🙂 Congratulations.

Thanks everyone for following, until next time, happy crafting 🙂

500 Likes giveaway- OneMadTatter

Woo Hoo- 500 likes over on Facebook! Welcome to our newest likers. That means it is time for a giveaway. This time I am running it just through facebook comments, that way I can contact the winner easily (I hope) 😀 So, while the details are here, please go to: https://www.facebook.com/pages/One-Mad-Tatter/239600219420054 to like and comment to enter.

I recently re-discovered Marilee’s Etsy Yarnplayer store…and have bought a pattern of hers via download- so easy I wanted to share the excitement. Marilee also has beautiful hand-dyed thread and jewellery available through her store. The prize for this giveaway is up to $AU30 from Marilee Rockley’s https://www.etsy.com/au/people/yarnplayer [You will send me the selection you would like and I will pay for it and organise for Marilee post it to you] There is only one prize this time for international postage.

For my likers in Australia- you can be in the draw above, and also be in a second draw- for a copy of Ben Fikkert’s Floriade book. This highly sought after book has recently been reprinted and my copies arrived a short time ago. Please include the country ‘Australia’ in your response on the OneMadTatter Facebook page.

So- to the competition question- I would like to know the most exciting craft purchase you have made! Maybe it is a pattern download? Perhaps some thread? A highly sought after book (Mary Kinior 🙂 )? One of my top 5 would be my sewing cabinet, and another in the short list would be Rebecca Jone’s “complete book of tatting” that i stumbled across at a craft store and helped me ‘get’ the flip!   🙂 Share your most exciting craft purchase on the OneMadTatter Facebook page and you are in the draw 🙂

I can’t wait to hear/read your answers, good luck- until next time Happy Tatting

This week I have been snowed under at work (figuratively speaking, because we have had some hot weather this week in Melbourne), but have finished off a set of the Hydrangea Doilies from “New Tatting” Tomoko Morimoto’s book. I love this book, the colours are fabulous and inspiring. I still have to block the doilies, but here is a picture- they are simple, delicate and pretty. I think they will make a lovely Christmas present 🙂 10522735_795664550480282_733047507224163210_n Thanks for your support. I have had such fun I think I will do another giveaway at 400 likes…lets see how soon that is 🙂

As always, until next time – happy tatting
