1,500 likers giveaway

I’m very excited to announce a new giveaway to celebrate 1,500 likers on the One Mad Tatter Facebook page. There will be two prizes – one for my Australian and New Zealand followers, and one for my international followers. For my local followers, I will put together a craft pack- including a vintage tatting book and Alenalea thread, that I will post to you. The ever increasing price of international postage means that the International prize will be a selection of PDF tatting patterns, that can be delivered by email to you.

The threads and PDF patterns will come from Alenalea’s Etsy shop . The International winner will get the 2015 snowflakes pattern and have a choice of 2 other patterns from Alenalea’s store. I have organised to pay for these patterns on your behalf and email them to you. Once again- this is a hobby blog and I have no commercial motive, only that I would like to support local and international tatters. Thanks to the lovely Lea for letting me gift her patterns in this round-about way.

For the local winner – I have added a photo of the books I will give away below. I will also include some of Lea’s lovely threads (from my stash) and some beads and little tatting knit knacks.

To enter: please answer the question by commenting below, or on the One Mad Tatter Facebook page under the post where this link is shared. The prize will be drawn next Sunday, November 20th at 16.00 (4pm) Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time. I will list all of your names in the order you have commented, assign a number and get my random number generator (AKA my son, Little Tacker) to pick a number. I will announce the winner on the facebook page and blog on Sunday November 20th,  after the draw.

THE QUESTION: I wonder what is your favourite pattern to make and why? It may be a tatting pattern, or another craft.

In other news: Recently, I did enjoy test tatting and making Alenalea’s little christmas tree 🙂 This was made in size 50 Altin Basak threads, with some seed beads and a little bell added. They would make a nice earring in this size, although I think I will add some ribbon and use it as an ornament alongside some little Angels from last year.

So, good luck with your entries, and I look forward to reading and responding to your comments.

As always, happy tatting,

Fiona T

An op shop find and a random ‘craft pack’ prize draw

A few weeks ago my sister and I stopped into an op shop on our way to play tennis. We looked through some great stuff, though their craft section was a bit disappointing. I found I couldn’t walk out of the shop without this little beaded pearl purse. I have no idea what I will do with it- but it is so nice. I’m sure I will use it one day 😀op shop beaded purse and gloves

Thanks to my lovely followers here and on facebook- now just over 800 likers, and nearly 900 with an rss link directly to the blog too 🙂 To celebrate, I decided that I would have a random ‘craft pack’ prize draw. But, this time there is a difference- I have already drawn a winner. I decided to draw the prize from those who have commented on my blog the most since it began. It is my way of honouring those of you who have been on this journey with me for a long time, and who have supported me consistently with lovely comments. There are approx 10 regular commenters over the last 3 years….including Tatting Margaret, Barbara G, Notewords, Muskaan, Kristen, Berice, Marina, and Jenni. So- without any further ado- the winner is (brrrrr.. drum roll)  Barbara G. Your craft pack will include a book (I will give you a couple of choices), thread and some surprises 🙂 Barbara- please contact me through facebook message, or craftree to organise which books and delivery 🙂 Congratulations.

Thanks everyone for following, until next time, happy crafting 🙂

Amusement Doily Facebook Tat-Along

Just before New Year Liyarra, over at the Facebook “Tatting” page, suggested the Amusement doily as a tat along – she and another tatter were keen to start it and it seems a number of us were looking for a holiday project too. The emerging conversation is here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Tatting/permalink/10152443252606846/ (you may need to join the group to read the conversation).    The link to the original pattern (in the way back machine- internet archive)  Amusement.  I have had fun tatting this doily, I was looking for a project and when this popped up on facebook I used the shuttles I had wound (just waiting for a project) and began this. It is a nice pattern- quick to work up. So quick I decided to make two of these doilies for my Mum, as they match the colours in one of her smocking samplers. Here are my pictures of work so far- I hope to finish the pink version by tomrrow…and have an idea for one more colour scheme, not purple 🙂  Amusement doily one mad tatter- blue and ecru 2015Amusement doily blue and pink versions 2015So- do you think you would like to join us? It would be great to see more of these made- what colour will you choose?

Until next time, happy tatting,

Fiona T

Over 300 likers- celebration ‘craftpack’ give away.

The 2 identical tatting craft packs – to be given away to two lucky people who comment – one here on the blog, and one on Facebook!

Wow- it has been a busy week out our house. It was also a busy week for the facebook page for onemadtatter blog – we are at over 300 likers. That has jumped from around 250 a week ago. So I have cleaned out my stash* and have 2 identical (except for colour of thread and shuttles) tatting craft packs (pictured above) I will also add chocolate before posting. You will need to comment on the blog post or on the facebook page (under the link to the blog post). Yes- I will post internationally (I am based in Australia). There will be one winner chosen from each forum – that is one commenter from the blog and one from Facebook – if you comment on both you have double the chance 🙂  Next Saturday- November 22nd at 5pm (Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time) I will put names into a list and use a random number generator to pick the winners. I will announce these on this blog and through facebook after the draw.

One of my greatest triumphs in tatting was mastering the flip- it took a long time for me to do this as I was learning from books, before you-tube and internet could show me. For more about this learning journey see this post.

So my question to you – what do you think is your greatest craft triumph? I can’t wait to read about it 🙂

Until next time, thanks for your support and happy crafting

Fiona T

*Items in this giveaway are from my craft ‘stash’ – all items were purchased by myself and stored in my pet free, smoke free home. The vintage tatting books are in good second hand condition. All other items are new.

Playing with Metallic Thread

Wow, it has been a busy couple of weeks here! The facebook page got up to 75 likers, and the random craft draw winner was Bobbie from the US. She received her craft pack this week, and kindly posted a photo of it, as I had forgotten to do this before wrapping the parcel for postage. Bobbie is a new tatter, learning from her Mum, so welcome Bobbie, I hope you have many years of fun tatting all sorts of lovely things. The photo is below and in the slide show. There will be another random draw at 100 likers, and I am planning something a little different this time, more details closer to the time.

Facebook 75 likers prize

Last week I got some new metallic threads from Crochet Australia. I haven’t used any metallic threads for tatting before. These were on sale, and are ‘Altin Basak’ threads that I have heard about, but not tried before.  I didn’t blog last week as I wanted to use the time to find some quick patterns and test out my new threads. Here are some pictures of what I made as a slide show. I have also included a cobweb doily that I made a few weeks ago, but have only recently sewn in the ends!

Until next week, happy tatting

Royal Melbourne Show: 3D Tatting meets Art Interpretation

Below is a picture of my show entry this year. It is a 3D interpretation of ‘Van Gogh’s Irises’. I used Linda Davies Irises pattern (from her book “Tatted flowers from bulbs”, and made them in size 40 lizbeth and size 40 mercerised cotton. The background I sourced from Creative commons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:VanGoghIrises2.jpg)  and it is sectioned to give a context for this piece for those unfamiliar with this painting (Thanks Nell for the idea). I received a Commendation for this entry in the Royal Melbourne Show this year. I hope to get WH to take a better picture of it and will post it soon. I also want to frame this and pop it on my wall opposite our print of the painting.

The ‘One Mad Tatter’ facebook page now has 76 likers, and so I drew the random craft pack winner for the 75 likers milestone. The winner has been in contact and I am sending her craft pack to her this week. Congratulations Bobbie! All three winners so far have been international, and it is great to be making so many connections with tatters and crafty people both near and far. The next random draw will be at 100 likers, and I am planning something a little different for this draw, more details as we get closer.

Those who were following my other challenge (scroll down for the most recent picture,or click here for the first post about this idea), as I haven’t had much time on it, I am still in round 4, making and joining individual flowers.  It is slowly progressing, and I hope to have this round completed over the next few weeks to show you a picture.

As always, Happy Tatting

A week of school holidays

This week hasn’t seen much time for tatting. LT (my son) has been home from school on school holidays. We have been visiting friends and enjoying time together. I have been trying to get work done at home as I am back at work this week. Excuses aside, I have begun to work on some tatted bookmarks for LT’s teachers, as presents for the end of the year. I haven’t worked any more on the Russian Doily, so last weeks picture is the most recent.

The one mad tatter Facebook page is up to 73 likers, so pop over and join if you haven’t already and be in the draw for the ’75 likers’ craft pack. There will also be a giveaway at 100 likers. All current likers are in the draw, and I post internationally.

That’s all for this week, better get some work done while LT is playing with his Dad (WH).

Tatted Challenge Part 2

In the last 2 weeks I have managed to complete the third round of the doily I am working out from a picture, see posts here, and here for background information.

Here is a picture of the third round:I am quite pleased with how it is progressing. I still haven’t quite worked out which flowers will give the best spacing, and am trying some from a few different books to see what works best. I would like the center of the flower to be a different colour to the petals, and so far the Lynn Morton flower pattern like I used in this doily seem to look the best, but I only do the first 2 rounds and have modified the numbers of picots and chains to emulate the 5 petal flower in the doily I am re-creating. I will keep experimenting.

This week I also took my show entry for the ‘royal melbourne show’ in to be judged. The results will be published next Saturday and I hope to get to the show on Sunday to see all of the other wonderful entries. There were more entries in the tatting section this year than previous years, and it is great to see an increase of entries in this category. I will publish pictures of my entry in my next blog, I am quite proud of how my vision for this piece came together in the last few weeks (thanks to some of my students for their help too).

It was also great to here through intatters some movement on the ‘Norma Benporath Trove’ project. We are able to create and share visual diagrams of the old patterns on this site, and link them back to the Trove site. I am eager to make a visual diagram of the piece I test tatted last January, but wont have time until later this year to look at doing this, so hope someone else doesn’t beat me to it :D. Here is a link to Jon’s blog, as she has been working through test tatting many of the patterns and showing them on her blog,  and is also the one who has found out how we can share the visual diagrams with a wider community, thanks Jon for sharing and the wonderful work you are doing.

We are heading towards 75 likers on the facebook page, so I am stocking up for the next craft  random giveaway (all likers, old and new are in the draw). I am also planning a different type of giveaway when we reach 100 likers on facebook…so stay tuned for that one.

Thanks to all for your comments, emails and encouragement.

Until next time, happy tatting,

Fiona T
